Deepalaya is the largest operating NGO in Delhi, that deals with issues affecting the development of the urban and rural poor in India, with a special focus on children. Deepalaya’s driving force is in its slogan – ‘Every child deserves a chance’.
Deepalaya school in Kalkaji is one of their largest schools in Delhi. This group is one of the largest charitable institutions in the capital city.
The school design is largely affected by the site typography. The contours have led to the creation of a lower ground floor level which forms the auditorium. Over this is a large landscape court that can be viewed from all three floors of class room blocks. The school has been designed with two such semi-open central courtyard spaces that act like breathers
The levels, the staggered blocking of the building and the accentuated staircase well, create a rich play of light all throughout the school at various points of the day. The use of earth tones in the form of exposed brick and concrete gives a rustic feel and a backdrop that is textured for the light to play off of.
